- From a limited mintage of 121,000 pieces, the vast majority of which succumbed to heavy commercial use in the burgeoning West Coast economy of the later Gold Rush era. Even Fine and VF examples of this early date San Francisco Mint silver issue are difficult to locate, Larry Briggs assigning such pieces a Rarity-4 rating in his 1991 reference on the Liberty Seated quarter series. The offered coin delivers pleasing circulated cameo contrast between deep steely-charcoal fields and lighter pewter gray motifs. Much bold detail remains, and the surfaces have no marks that are distracting to the unaided eye.
