- 1721-H French Colonies Sou, or 9 Deniers. La Rochelle Mint. Breen-261. EF-45 (PCGS). Authorized by royal edict of King Louis XV dated June 1721 exclusively for circulation in the colonies, the copper coinage of 1721-1722 was struck on planchets obtained from Sweden. Most of the examples that eventually reached New France are attributed to the La Rochelle Mint, as here, although many were later returned to France proper as the colonists disliked copper. Handsome medium-brown patination to most areas, glints of original light-orange color are still discernible around some of the devices. There are few notable abrasions, although the reverse is overall rough in texture (generally as made) with a trace of old, light encrustation around a few of the letters.
