Lot Description
1803 Draped Bust Half Dime. LM-2. Rarity-4. Large 8. AU-55 (PCGS). A visually appealing example with superior technical quality to further tempt the advanced type collector or early half dime variety enthusiast. Otherwise golden-gray surfaces exhibit blended lilac-rose highlights that are more pronounced on the reverse. The detail is remarkably sharp for the type, a few isolated areas of softness notwithstanding, and with appreciable remnants of frosty luster this is clearly a superior Draped Bust half dime in all regards. Of the two known die marriages for the Large 8 Guide Bookvariety of this issue, LM-2 is by far the scarcer in numismatic circles. The two share the same obverse, the reverse of LM-2 identified by a leaf joined to the base of the letter C in AMERICA. This variety is also a formidable condition rarity and is seldom offered finer than VF. Not all that far removed from the Mint State category, this is a noteworthy survivor that ranks among the finer known. PCGS Population (both die marriages of the Large 8 variety): 6; 13 finer, just six of which are Mint State (MS-65+ finest). PCGS# 4269. NGC ID: 2329. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
