- Maris 56-n Struck Over Nova Eborac
1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 56-n, W-5310. Rarity-1. Camel Head--Overstruck on 1787 Nova Eborac Copper. VF-20 (PCGS).
127.0 grains. A special example of this variety with an unusual and desirable undertype, a 1787 Reverse Figure Seated Left Nova Eborac copper. The obverse is visible under the New Jersey reverse, with the portrait facing the 6 o'clock position on the New Jersey; the chin of the profile and the hair ribbon bow are both easily seen. On the New Jersey obverse, the bent elbow of the reverse seated figure on the mane of the horsehead is enough to fully identify the host. The surfaces are glossy medium brown, smooth and appealing, with excellent eye appeal on both sides. Aside from a little scratch under RE of CAESAREA, this coin is positively choice.
We've had two examples of this variety struck over Nova Eboracs in the last 20 or so years. Syd Martin had one (of course), sold in our August 2022 auction for $3,120; it was graded VF-35 (PCGS). There was also one in the 2019 E Pluribus Unum sale as lot 6183, graded VF Details, Environmental Damage (PCGS). Another was offered (one of these?) in our May 1989 sale of John Foreman's New Jerseys as lot 1416, graded Fine. Surely others await discovery, likely biding their time as misidentified Connecticuts.
Provenance: From the E Pluribus Unum Collection.
PCGS# 767837.
