Description du lot
1871-CC Liberty Half Eagle. Winter 1-A. AU-55 (PCGS). 1899-S Liberty Half Eagle. MS-65 (NGC). One of the rarest and most challenging Carson City Mint half eagles to collect, a mintage of 20,770 pieces for the second year 1871-CC does represent a sizeable increase over the total achieved for the 1870-CC (just 7,675 coins). Writing in the excellent 2003 book The Mint on Carson Street, however, Rusty Goe estimates that less than 1% of the original mintage for this issue is extant, or a mere 140-175 coins. Just shy of Condition Census standing, this impressive Choice AU exhibits bright medium-orange color with a generally sharp strike to the devices. The eagle's neck on the reverse is softly defined, as typically noted for examples of this issue. Vibrant and satiny in sheen, with no individually distracting blemishes in spite of a somewhat scuffy "look" to the obverse. The back of the PCGS insert is badly scuffed, making it difficult to examine the mintmark area on the coin.
