Lot Description
Tied for FINEST of this very scarce issue. At the beginning of the year, mint die sinkers used a date logotype with the 3 with the loops coming close together, making the 3 look similar to an 8. Part way through the year, the logotype was changed. The Closed 3 variety is the rarer of the two. A thick, frosty, satin mint luster blooms all over on both sides. The pale gold iridescent tone over the sultry nickel silver surfaces. Sharply struck from broken dies. Extensive die cracks on the obverse add charm and character to the exceptional eye appeal. PCGS 13, NGC 1, CAC 2. There are just two examples graded MS66+ and NONE are finer. Neither example has ever sold in auction, but there is a Collectors Universe value of $13,500. A PCGS/CAC MS66 (not "+") sold for $5,520 in the 2018 FUN auction, and that was the ONLY CAC MS66 to ever sell as well. We know that with top ranking Registry Set collectors battling it out, this coin will hit a record price realized when the gavel falls. Good luck! Cert. Number 38475976 PCGS # 003801
