- <strong>Obv:</strong> Barber's Head, Liberty facing left, general style used on the pattern $50 pieces of 1877. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is above, 13 stars are arranged around the border seven left, six right, and the date 1878 is below. On this particular die, the tip of Liberty's coronet is centered between the words IN and GOD and the lowest hair curls is closer to the final digit 8 in the date than it is to star 13. Rev: A perched eagle with drooped wings holds an olive branch and arrows in is talons. The Latin Motto E PLURIBUS UNUM in small Gothic letters curves above the eagle. Around the border is the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above, the denomination ONE DOLLAR below. On this particular die, the letter B in PLURIBUS is centered under the space between the letters TE in STATES and the letter M in UNUM is centered under the letter M in AMERICA. This is a boldly toned pewter and steel-olive specimen with generally sharp strike detail remaining in the presence of light rub.
