- Lot Description
- 1876 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. FS-401. C in Neck. Proof-64 (PCGS). Light steel-gray toning over the silver reflectivity on the obverse and reverse. This is the variety with the top third of a "C" almost certainly from the CC mintmark--but placed on Liberty's neck right at the base. Obviously this was a deliberate act, and fits hand and glove with many other shenanigans going on at the Philadelphia Mint in this period. Sometimes a little creativity at work goes a long way, as we sit here 137 years latter pondering why this might have been done on these Philadelphia Proof half dollars.
