Breen Die State I. In addition to its absolute rarity, Sheldon-142 is well known among specialists for its conditionally challenging nature. The Widmer Family specimen is highly regarded within that community of numismatists, ranking high in the both the Bland and Noyes census listings despite its less-than-perfect surfaces. Finely granular overall, both sides also reveal some crusty earthen build up in isolated areas, most notably within Liberty's hair. A thin, shallow scrape on the head below the letter B in LIBERTY and several fine scratches at the junction of the cheek and neck are also noted, although none of these marks come readily to the fore during in-hand viewing. Centering is good on the reverse, the obverse offset to 7 o'clock with the border denticulation at lower left beyond the flan. Overall detail is sharp for the grade, nonetheless, and there is plenty of eye appeal. This is Bland's CC#1 coin for the 1797 S-142 dies, which he grades EAC VF30, net VF20; Noyes grades it EAC VF30, net F12, and places it at CC#2 in his census.
