- Plenty of bold detail remains bright, honey-rose surfaces. The mintage of 24,000 coins for this issue mostly went immediately into the channels of West Coast commerce. "Much rarer in all grades than mintage figure suggests," wrote Walter Breen, who also noted that VF or an occasional EF is the standard condition for the 1861-S quarter eagle. About Uncirculated survivors such as this are seldom seen, and it is worth noting that "name" collections of yesteryear typically had coins in significantly lower grades. A significant opportunity for the gold connoisseur and specialist.
