Lot Description
An exceptionally sharp example of this scarce Confederation-era issue. Ideally centered on the typically narrow planchet stock used on these pieces, allowing for the unusual circumstance of the entire date being visible. The legends and devices are complete and sharply defined on both sides. The obverse shows some trivial inherent granularity but still displays good gloss and aesthetic appeal, with mostly medium brown surfaces showing some darker areas in the southwest quadrant. The reverse is a bit glossier and smoother, showing good even light brown color. Neither side shows marks or distractions of significance, making this an especially desirable high grade example. Struck as a commercial endeavor during the Wild West era before the U.S. Constitution was ratified, most survivors are well worn and precious few persist in better grades than this one.
