- Lot Description
- Winter 1-A, McCloskey-A. This is the more common of the two die-marriages for 1839-D, instantly recognizable by the missing olive branches on the reverse. That being said, the popularity of this coin stems less from actual scarcity, and from the unusual obverse "D "mintmark -- the only one for the quarter-eagle series. Better about-uncirculated examples are scarce and highly coveted, while mint-state examples are rare and very expensive. This is a much better AU coin, showing slightly flashy fields and fairly bold details, even if the stars are not completely struck up. Wheat-gold hue layers over the entire surface.
