Lot Description
1858 Liberty Seated Quarter. Proof-63 (PCGS). Frosty motifs and mirror fields are alive with speckled neon blue, gold, and peach iridescence. An ages-old shallow horizontal scratch across Liberty's lap and shield arm, partly hidden by the toning, is no doubt the reason for the assigned grade; the balance of the coin is essentially pristine. Base of 1 in date repunched. One of 300 or so proofs of the date struck; for decades it was thought that just 80 proof examples of the silver issues of the date, including the proof-only 1858 silver dollar, were struck, but quantities available today suggest that 300 is closer to reality. A pleasing piece in spite of a tiny mishap.
