Lot Description
A large planchet variant of this RR number and, as is the case with most of these, overstruck on a Nova Constellatio copper. Remnants of the undertype remain bold in the centers on both sides, most notably on the reverse, where the all-seeing eye is clear within the seated figure. Middle state for the RR-12 dies, the obverse with a crack from the border at left through the letter E in VERMON and into the ribbon at the back of the effigy's head. Warmly toned olive-copper surfaces are mircogranular, but show no sizeable or otherwise significant marks even when observed under magnification. Less-then-perfect centering explains the lack of denticulation along the lower right obverse and reverse borders, but peripheral lettering is complete on both sides and the date is clear despite softness to the bottom of the individual digits. Bold EF detail through the centers for the type, and an overall pleasing example.
