A scarce issue with a mintage of 27,400 pieces, Douglas Winter (<em>Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1839-1909</em>, 2020) ranks the 1842-O as tied for 12th rarest among the 21 early date New Orleans Mint eagles.
