THE SAN DIEGO COLLECTION Ranking high up in the Condition Census for this Rarity-2 die pairing, this near-GEM is a spectacular example for the date or die marriage. A full blooming cartwheel mint brilliance accents the wonderfully colorful dappled toning. Hues of slate and rose mingle with hints of original silver-gray that peek out when rotated in a light. Softly struck, as typical on the first four stars, the remainder of the details are crisp and full. The surfaces display a GEM-like quality, with minimal traces of contact visible, even with careful, magnified inspection. The eye appeal is great. Ex Heritage, October 2016, lot 5264, as a PCGS MS64; our consignor. PCGS 7, NGC 1. No MS64+ has ever sold in auction, but in the weaker market of October 2016, this coin brought $7,638 in a regular MS64 grade holder. The MS64+ PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $15,500.
