1887 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. AU-53 (NGC). This lustrous and appealing coin exhibits pale pink tinting to otherwise wheat-gold surfaces. During a decade of tiny mintages for the denomination, the 1887 $3 stepped up to the plate and was produced to the tune of 6,000 circulation strikes, the highest in the series since the 1878 coinage.
