- Bright medium gold surfaces showcase appreciable frosty luster with faint traces of semi-reflectivity. The strike is bold for the issue and, while a tad glossy, the surfaces reveal no individually distracting abrasions during in-hand viewing. For decades the gold coins of the Charlotte and Dahlonega mints have overshadowed the issues of Philadelphia, Carson City, New Orleans, and San Francisco in the eyes of collectors. Just 4,808 1846-C quarter eagles were produced and only 125 or so coins survive. The typical example is generally found at VF to EF, with certified AU pieces such as this significantly more elusive.
