Particularly crusty on the reverse, that side of the coin is toned in a rich mottling of steel-gray and sandy-gold patina. For the reverse we note a halo of coppery-gray peripheral color around a lighter sandy-silver center. This die pairing usually comes softly struck in the centers, seen here on the obverse, but with only light wear from circulation the balance of the features retain bold to sharp definition. As one of the most readily obtainable die marriages in the entire early dollar series of 1794 to 1803, the 1798 BB-105 is always in demand for type purposes. Choice AUs are at the lower reaches of Condition Census, confirming this just miss AU-53 as the finest realistically obtainable for many collectors. BB Die State III.
