Lot Description
1830 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-107. Rarity-2. Small 0. MS-64 (NGC). This beautifully toned example exhibits cobalt blue peripheral iridescence around centers that are equally attractive in salmon pink and silver-apricot. The luster is full and satiny throughout, the strike razor sharp from the denticles to the centers. The fifth edition (2013) of the Overton reference on early half dollars states, "Some specimens [of the 1830 O-107] show recutting along top of bottom serifs of 1," and this is just such a coin. A plentiful die marriage in an absolute sense, although the present example qualifies as Condition Census and is rare from the standpoint of preservation, as such. An apparent newcomer to the census, this impressive coin does not appear to be included in the Spring 2020 edition of Stephen J. Herrman's Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars: 1794-1839. PCGS# 39817. NGC ID: 24FU. Click here for certification details from NGC.
