- 152.4 grains. Handsome light mahogany brown surfaces are uniform in tone throughout, hard and glossy. Softness at the centers is typical of the variety to varying degrees and all the finest survivors show similar fine roughness in these areas. Beautifully centered on both sides with all peripheral motifs free of the rims. A really lovely coin, noted as second finest known in the Robert Martin notebook behind the outstanding Mint State Oechsner coin we sold as part of the E Pluribus Unum Collection in November 2020 (for $66,000). It seems safe to apply "second finest" to the Syd Martin primary coin, graded AU-50, that sold for $24,000 in our Winter 2022 sale:1322, and the third finest is probably this. Struck from the later die state with clash marks from reverse dentils visible over CONNEC and a prominent O transferred from CONNEC at the right end of the reverse's exergual divider. A connoisseur's example of this distinctive named variety.
