Lot Description
This GEM Proof 1864 half dollar ranks among the highest graded in the Deep/Ultra Cameo designations, the second finest such graded by NGC, bested only by a single PR66 UCAM at that service. An amazingly deep and beaming black and white contrast is bold and gorgeous on this Civil War date half dollar. Incredible icy, reflective fields are sleek and with just some minor lines visible with the aid of a strong glass on both sides, providing a great contrast to the thickly frosted devices. The reverse shows some swirling die polish lines and traces of pale iridescence, but the overall look is black and white and quite bold. Only 470 Proofs were struck. PCGS 0, NGC 1. No PR65+ in this designation ever sold in auction. We sold a PR65 Ultra Cameo in October 2021 for $11,750 and an NGC PR66 Ultra Cameo sold back in January 2013 for $30,550. The Collectors Universe Price Guide fails to list a value in this grade, but is listed at $11,000 in PR64+ DCAM and $57,500 in PR66 DCAM. This coin will bring somewhere between these levels, and our estimate may prove very conservative. Bound for a great set of Proof Seated halves or Civil War era coins. Good luck. Cert.
