Lot Description

Manley Die State 1.0. This generally chestnut-brown example displays considerable intermingled olive-copper patina on both sides. The strike is well centered and universally bold, the reverse rotated approximately 45 degrees clockwise from coin turn, an alignment that Manley notes for this die state. Hard, tight and free of significant marks, a faint carbon spot at 4:30 on the obverse border is the only singularly mentionable blemish.<p>Cohen-5 represents the last of the "Heavy Wreath" die marriages of the 1794 Liberty Cap half cent. It comes in both Small Edge Letters (C-5a) and Large Edge Letters (C-5b) subvarieties, the former the more common, but still scarce with Bill Eckberg accounting for only 115 to 125 coins extant in all grades. This PCGS-certified Choice EF is finer than that typically offered, most of which grade VF or lower. A highlight of the early date half cent varieties in the Widmer Family Collection, and sure to serve with distinction in another advanced early copper cabinet.
