Did the die engraver have issues punching the date into this die or what?! First the 3 punch broke, (O-101) and the looks loops of the 3 were disconnected. Realizing the issue, he manually tried to fix it, putting a “patch” to close the gap, creating the O-101a variety. This both states have been popular with collectors for generations, and their inclusion in the Red Book have made them must have halves for serious collectors. This one has brilliant silver centers with a vibrant tone at the rims. Using a strong glass we note some stray lines, but overall, very pretty. PCGS 13, NGC 2. The last PCGS-coin to sell realized a strong $4,112, back in January 2014, a price inline with AU58 graded examples, even though it is evident that it had been dipped.
