Lot Description
Presumably struck in goloid alloy of 3.6% gold, 86.4% silver, 10.0% copper. Obv: A head of Liberty faces left with the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM above and the date 1878 below. Thirteen stars are arranged at the border seven left, six right. Liberty is wearing a cap ornamented with ears of wheat, cotton leaves and bolls, and the cap is inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Rev: A circle of 38 stars encloses the inscription GOLOID / 1 - G. / 24 - S. / .9 FINE. / 258 GRS. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed along the upper border and the denomination ONE DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower border. Boldly to sharply struck features are dressed in deep, rich toning. The dominant colors are charcoal gray, rose-russet and steel-olive, although direct lighting calls forth more vivid undertones of reddish-apricot. This is Baber's third pattern goloid dollar of the year, and the uspatterns.com website accounts for approximately two dozen silver specimens in goloid and standard alloy combined.
