- Tompkins Die Stage 3/1, Rea et al. Die State c. Significant Mint State preservation for this scarce and conditionally challenged Browning number. Both sides are frosty to modesty semi-reflective in finish, the strike detail universally bold to sharp throughout the design. Toning is attractive in light champagne-pink iridescence that deepens a bit at the borders. The in-hand appearance is remarkably smooth for the assigned grade, leaving it to a faint planchet drift mark (as made) in the right obverse field to serve as the most useful identifier for provenance purposes.<p>All die marriages of the 1821 Capped Bust quarter are scarce to rare, Browning-1 ranking around the middle of the six known varieties. The offered coin from the NorthEast Collection is ranked CC#2 for the die pairing in the 2008 Tompkins census, and tied for CC#2 in the 2010 Rea-Peterson-Karoleff-Kovach census. A fleeting bidding opportunity for advanced specialists in the challenging early U.S. Mint quarter series.
