Lot Description

This is a Condition Census example of the variety, according to Dick Graham in his <em>Registry of Die Varieties of Reeded Edge Half Dollars 1836-1839 </em>published in 2012. The GR-1 die pairing shares the same reverse as the 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar, which was the first of its denomination struck in the steam press and in a closed collar. Because of the shared reverse, it has been speculated that the 1837 GR-1 was possibly the first variety struck for the year.<p>Predominately deep slate in appearance, both sides of this piece are well matched with light rose and gold iridescence visible as the coin is rotated under lighting. Well struck, which is typical for the variety. Graham recommends that "you purchase this variety when you can find a specimen, and try to upgrade later if the opportunity presents itself." This variety is very scare and difficult to find in any grade.
