Lot Description
High end for the issue and a rare mint state survivor of this scarce branch mint $2.50. Only 23,226 examples were struck, and clearly this coin is in the top 2 dozen graded by PCGS. The surfaces show a rich, sparkling mint luster that accents the rich golden color. Exceptionally well struck on both sides, all of Liberty’s hair curls and all the eagle’s feathers are crisply and fully defined. Upon close inspection a few tiny ticks and lines come into view, which account for the MS62 grade assigned. None of these are distracting to the eye. PCGS 12, NGC 12, CAC 3. The only CAC coin to sell in auction realized $7,050 in June 2016. PCGS has graded six each as MS63 and MS64. The most recent MS63 to sell realized $13,800 way back in 2007, and in January 1999 an MS61 sold for $10,638. An NGC MS62 sold in 2010 for $8,913. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $10,000. This really choice coin should see spirited bidding from southern branch mint specialists. Good luck! PCGS # 7745 Cert.
