1897-S Barber Quarter. MS-65 (NGC). One of the scarcest Barber quarters in all grades from Fine on up, the 1897-S has a limited mintage of just 542,229 pieces. As a solidly graded and very attractive Gem, the present example is rare and just shy of Condition Census standing. Richly toned on both sides, dominant turquoise-teal color blends with splashes of antique-reddish-gold iridescence here and there. With billowy mint frost and a razor sharp strike throughout, the surfaces are essentially void of noticeable contact marks. Far right mintmark placement with the S over the upright of the letter D in DOLLAR. NGC Census: just 8; with a mere four finer (MS-68 finest for the issue). PCGS# 5618. NGC ID: 23YC.
