Lot Description

The Mint struck just 500 Proof quarters in 1865, the year in which the Civil War finally came to an end. Survivors are scarce by the standards of the Liberty Seated series, and they enjoy heightened demand among collectors for two reasons. First, this is the final regular issue Proof of the No Motto design type (the unique Proof 1866 No Motto was made clandestinely by the Mint at a later date, possibly in the late 1870s or early 1880s). Second, the Proof 1865 is associated by date and mint with a low mintage, key date circulation strike issue of which just 58,800 pieces were produced.
