Lot Description
Manley Die State 2.0. Cohen-2 is one of the best known and most easily attributed varieties in the entire half cent series, featuring the only Classic Head obverse die with 12 stars. Whether this was a blunder or intentional is unknown, although in either case the die was employed to strike approximately one quarter of the 400,000 or so half cents produced bearing the 1828 date. As Ronald P. Manley (1998) notes, "although most specimens are in much lower grades, a number of Mint State specimens are known." However, these are hardly enough to satisfy collector demand as is the case with the 1828 C-3s that were once available in hoard quantity. This MS-63 example from the Widmer Family Collection offers deep chestnut and orange-brown toning on hard, frosty surfaces. It is boldly struck in all but a few isolated areas and retains a hint of faded mint red color on the reverse.
