Lot Description
1805/4 Draped Bust Half Dollar. O-102, T-5. Rarity-3. EF-40 (NGC). CAC. This original example is blanketed in a wonderful patina of gold and lavender-grey hues. The surfaces are smooth beneath a glass and free from noteworthy abrasions. This is the second and final use of this obverse die following its employment in the O-101 marriage, as demonstrated by the Garrett specimen in the previous lot. A thin crack now meanders up through the tip of Liberty's bust, across the lower drapery and meets the crack at star 2. The reverse show similar fatigue, with faint cracks along the tops of TES and AME. Subtle traces of mint luster remain in the protected regions, contributing to overall superior eye appeal. It is tied with just 5 other coins at the EF-40 level at NGC, including the Jules Reiver specimen. Provenance: From the Sutton Court Collection of Early Half Dollar Varieties. Earlier ex from Stack's sale of the John Glen Halsell, Jr. Collection of United States Half Dollars, March 1984, lot 549. NGC Census: 5; 5 finer through AU-58 (O-102 variety only). PCGS# 39292. NGC ID: 24EH. Click here for certification details from NGC.
