1796 S-83 R4 Liberty Cap. PCGS graded AU-53.Glossy tan and light brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints of the devices. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas on both sides and this cent has excellent eye appeal. The only notable mark is a small spot of dark toning or crud in the hair at the back of the head. There are tiny planchet chips on the head and in the opposing area at ENT and ribbon bow, a striking issue seen far too often on these Liberty Cap cents because the high relief of the head consumes too much of the planchet metal. Otherwise this cent might qualify for an even higher grade. M-LDS, Breen state II, with a die crack through ERTY and a chip that joins the end of the pole to the bust. The die flaw in the field before the chin is strong. A beautiful cent in a great die state. Graded AU55 net EF45 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #22660. Bland says AU50 and CC#4. Our grade is AU55. Comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer in 62.(PCGS # 35756) Value $25,000 - UP
