Losbeschreibung
1886 Liberty Seated Quarter. Proof-67 * Cameo (NGC). CAC. Golden-olive peripheral toning on the obverse yields to much lighter powder blue and pinkish-apricot iridescence in the center. Similar toning is present on the reverse, but is is generally bolder in appearance with more of an orange-russet halo around the periphery. The toning in all cases is iridescent in quality to allow ready appreciation of both deeply mirrored fields and sharply struck, well frosted devices. A lack of even trivial handling marks speaks volumes about the validity of the Superb Gem grade. Tied for finest graded within the designation by NGC. From a Proof mintage for the date of 886 pieces.
Fifty years or so ago Ruth Green, prominent Illinois coin dealer, and her husband, Charles, set about hoarding quarter dollars of this particular date and acquired somewhat over 100 pieces. The group was later dispersed.
