Description du lot
Unlike the San Francisco Mint, which struck both Type I and Type II double eagles in 1866, the Philadelphia Mint's production for that year was confined to w/Motto examples. Some 698,745 pieces were struck, and the typical survivor falls somewhere in the AU grade range. Mint State coins are very scarce and, per Doug Winter and Mike Fuljenz (Type Two Double Eagles: 1866-1876, 1999), they number only 40-45 individual coins. Qualifying as Condition Census per the criteria laid out by the authors, this lovely BU sports subdued rose-gold color and satiny mint luster. Sharply struck, as well, with no singularly distracting abrasions.
