Lot Description
Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. This is a boldly and evenly toned example with underlying mauve and powder blue iridescence to steely-charcoal and olive patina. A shallow, circular obverse strikethrough at the end of Liberty's bust is as made.
This single die marriage issue shares its reverse with the 1837 B-2 pairing. The 1838 is the final Capped Bust quarter issue, the mintage reported as 366,000 pieces. It is the product of a transitional year in the United States Mint's quarter dollar series, the Philadelphia Mint also delivering the first Liberty Seated examples in 1838, to the extent of 466,000 coins. The 1838 Capped Bust is readily obtainable in most grades and, as a final year issue, enjoys additional demand for type purposes.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Originally I had the Reiver AU-58 coin as my set piece, but chose to sell it to acquire other coins. I only recently replaced it with the coin offered here, a nice example of the issue with an interesting strikethrough error on the obverse.
