- 1869 Pattern Five-Cent Piece. Judd-684, Pollock-763. Rarity-5. Nickel. Plain Edge. Proof-64 (NGC). A satiny and essentially untoned example of this five-cent pattern type, struck in nickel with a plain edge. Similar to the contemporary three-cent nickel design, with the reverse central "III" motif changed to a Roman numeral V, a star added to the front of Liberty's coronet, and a Maltese cross and scroll that join the two ends of the upper reverse wreath. Both sides are contact-free. Minor planchet roughness on Liberty's cheek is the result of an incomplete striking impression.
