- 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 64-t, W-5380. Rarity-1. Small Planchet. AU-50 (PCGS).
153.0 grains. Choice and chocolate brown in tone, the surfaces here are generally quite smooth and clean but for the most minor of planchet flakes on both sides. Well struck and well centered, with none of the mysterious missing nodules in the scroll below the horse's head, as seen on some specimens of Maris 64-t. Called "among the finest auctioned" in this coin's last auction appearance, there are enough high quality examples of Maris 64-t to make that a hard statement to substantiate. Nonetheless, this is a very handsome coin that combined with its long chain of prestigious numismatic owners, makes this an ideal coin for collector of New Jerseys who values both history and beauty in their coins.
Provenance: From the Dr. Gordon Shaw Collection. Earlier ex William Wallace Hays Collection (circle ticket included); Hillyer Ryder; F.C.C. Boyd; John J. Ford, Jr.; Bowers and Merena's Sale of Selections from the Boyd, Brand and Ryder Collections, March 1990, lot 1271.
