- Tompkins Die Stage 2/1, Rea et al. Die State b. This is the rarer late obverse die state of the 1837 Browning-4 variety, identifiable by a bisecting crack from the lower border below the end of Liberty's bust, to the upper border above the cap. Interestingly, our consignor (2008) observes that, "it seems that almost all of the top condition coins are of the late stage." Offered is a richly toned AU example toned in a blend of olive-gray, antique silver, reddish-rose, pale gold and powder blue that proponents of originality will find irresistible. Boldly to sharply defined in the absence of all but light wear, both sides retain ample mint frost that flashes into view as the surfaces dip into a light.
