- 1773 Virginia Halfpenny. Newman 4-O, W-1470. No Period After GEORGIVS, 7 Harp Strings. MS-65 RB (NGC). This bright and glossy golden-tan Virginia halfpenny exhibits splashes of bright mint orange among the obverse devices, while the reverse is mainly soft orange-rose. Nicely struck if from somewhat rusted dies. A bold raised dot is noted in the uppermost trefoil in George's wreath, and swelling is noted in the reverse field at the rusted and misshapen A in VIRGINIA. It is worth noting that N.4-O was not represented among the numerous die varieties of Virginia halfpennies offered in our sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection. Definitely a Gem at all levels, and an attractive piece that deserves strong bidding activity.
