- 1795 dollar. Bowers Borckardt-27, Bolender-5. Rarity-1. Flowing Hair, Three Leaves. MS-65 (NGC). Type and designer: 1794-1795 Flowing Hair. By Robert Scot. A lovely specimen, above average in strike, some lightness of detail at the reverse center, as normal. Some mint-caused adjustment marks around the periphery of the obverse are not unusual and, in this case, are most notable at the left border. The stars are sharp, the hair on Miss Liberty is well defined, and all of the eagle's feathers are discernible, although on the highest point of the breast they are not sharp. The leaves are definitive as are the letters. The surfaces are brilliant silvery gray and show exceptional lustre. The dentils atop the reverse are somewhat flatly struck, but most other details are crisp, including the edge lettering. No flaws require notice, and the superlatives almost cannot be lavished to excess. This is one of the finest known specimens of this variety, the coin chosen as the plate coin in Q. David Bower's Silver Dollar Encyclopedia and a highlight of the Koshkarian cabinet, off the market since its purchase in 1991. A truly spectacular coin.
NGC Census: 4 (including one *); 2 finer among all specimens of this date (MS-66 finest). Die State: Bowers' state IV (described in that work as not seen by the author), with very subtle evidence of a clash mark coming from Liberty's chin and visible under scrutiny.
Provenance: From Auctions by Bowers and Merena's sale of the Marvin Matlock Collection, March 1991, Lot 460. The original lot ticket accompanies this lot.
