- Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. Tompkins Plate Coin. Really an attractive coin, the centers are brilliant to allow ready appreciation of abundant frosty to semi-reflective luster. The peripheries, equally lustrous, are further enhanced by halos of vivid olive, blue and reddish-gold iridescence, the toning bolder and more extensive on the obverse. Sharp AU detail on both sides, the surfaces reveal a few hairlines and some light marks under close inspection with a loupe, but show no singularly distracting blemishes during in-hand viewing.
Quarter dollar coinage from 1828-dated dies commenced with warrant #1133 for 4,000 coins, delivered on December 29, 1827, and continued through December 19, 1828, for a modest total mintage of 106,000 pieces. The four die marriages of this issue include two that are very scare to rare, including the eagerly sought B-3 25/50 C. (see below). The Browning-1, represented here, is the most frequently encountered variety of the issue, and it shares its obverse die with the date's B-2 and B-3 attributions. The reverse of the 1828 B-1 is the same that the Mint used for the legendary 1827/3/2 B-1 Proofs. The present example, in attractive About Uncirculated preservation, would nicely represent the type, date or die pairing in many collections.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: This is a premium quality example as an AU-50, as it has much more detail than the assigned grade would suggest. Another great coin purchased from Dick Osburn over the years and featured as a plate coin in my book.
