Lot Description
Using a shipment of copper from Matthew Boulton in Birmingham, England that arrived in November 1809, the Mint struck 218,025 large cents during calendar year 1811. The existing supply of blanks actually ran out in March and was not replenished until May 1812. The exact mintage from 1811-dated dies is unknown since some of the reported 218,025-piece delivery may have included coins dated 1810. Only two varieties are known for this issue, the Sheldon-287 perfect date offered here easily distinguished from its S-286 overdate counterpart.
