Lot Description

Warm, even olive-gold color is seen on this boldly defined example. Traces of frosty luster remain, the surfaces attractively original for a lightly circulated Southern gold coin from the Antebellum era. A scarce issue with a mintage of 27,400 pieces, Douglas Winter (Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1839-1909, 2020) ranks the 1842-O as tied for 12th rarest among the 21 early date New Orleans Mint eagles.<p>
