Lot Description
THE SOMMELIER COLLECTION The B-4 die pairing is a scarce one listed as a low Rarity-4, and the variety is easily attributed by the position of 5 and C in the denomination in relation to the arrow feathers and tail feathers respectively on the reverse. The engraver also used defective letter punches, with the T in LIBERTY missing its left foot, the I in AMERICA is missing its right foot. These mint made defects are relics of a time when dies were produced by hand, and because of the expense in die making, were overlooked. This piece has light wear, but central definition is soft from a typically weak strike. The surfaces are generally problem free for the grade, and the lightly worn surfaces are deeply toned with shades of sea-green and steely-blue. The eye appeal is quite nice. PCGS 26, NGC 17, CAC 6. This is the ex Eric P. Newman Collection coin, which first sold in auction in November 2013 for nearly $4,000 (plate matched)! The most recent PCGS/CAC piece sold for $3,840 in October 2019. The CAC CPG value is $4,440 and the PCGS Price Guide is listed at $3,750. A neat type coin with a great pedigree. Cert. Number 32191850 PCGS # 5313.00
