Despite a booming mintage of 9-million pieces -- the U.S. population was somewhat less than 50-million that year by comparison -- 1877-S proves elusive near the gem grade level. Here is a glorious example that boasts some semi-prooflike attributes and the attractiveness of a very sharp strike beneath almond-gold toning.
