Lot Description

Apart from the 1881, the 1870 is the final circulation strike nickel three-cent issue with a mintage of more than 1 million coins (1,335,000, to be exact). The more the nation distanced itself in time from the Civil War and the economic chaos it created, the less useful and desired this denomination became for commerce. With a sizeable mintage, the 1870 is only marginally scarce in circulated and lower Mint State grades by the standards of this series. Gems in MS-65 are very scarce, however, and anything finer is a notable condition rarity. So it is with this premium quality PCGS MS-66+, a brilliant and intensely lustrous example that will impress even the most discerning numismatist.
