152.9 grains. Offered is an exceptionally choice example of this popular, yet scarce and conditionally challenged Newman number. Wonderfully original surfaces are toned in a blend of chestnut and golden-brown. Both sides are hard and tight, free of flan flaws and troublesome handling marks. Centering is quite good, even if the impression is aligned slightly to lower left obverse and upper left reverse. Overall detail is impressively bold, if not sharp, accuracy alone compelling us to mention minor softness along the right obverse and reverse borders that affects the tops of the date digits on the former side, outside of the rings on the latter. The eye appeal is impressive, the quality undeniable. Early obverse die state, Newman A, with no peripheral clashing.<p>While there are a number of examples known in the EF range, PCGS has certified an AU on only six occasions, covering both the Newman 10-G and Newman 10-T varieties. None are better than AU-55. The remarkable Newman NGC/CAC AU-55 coin, generally acclaimed as finest known, brought $25,850 in 2014. We've sold only three examples of this variety certified at the AU level: the Fricke PCGS AU-55 that brought $26,400 in our sale of November 2021; a PCGS/CAC AU-50 example that netted $20,562.50 in our 2014 ANA sale; and Mr. August's first (!) PCGS AU-50 that traded for $12,000 through our Summer 2025 Global Showcase Auction. The really beautiful Retz coin, graded PCGS EF-40, brought $16,450 in our November 2012 auction. Retz ranked his own coin as eighth finest, two spots behind the aforementioned Richard August specimen. This one is comparable when all things are considered.<p>Not only was Mr. August able to acquire two Condition Census examples of Newman 10-T, but he also represented both obverse die states of the variety with those coins: the Summer 2025 Global Showcase coin was Die State B/B, this one A/B. A remarkable achievement, and the sign of a truly accomplished collector.
