Lot Description

A hard and satiny example bathed in rich copper-brown patina. Obverse impression off center to 11 o'clock, reverse to 12 o'clock, with the upper left obverse and upper reverse borders engaging the peripheral features in those areas. Striking detail is sharp where allowed by die state, although a number of flan flaws drift through both sides and interfere with some of the design elements, most notable the sun face, which is obscured by a planchet void. There are no marks or other post-production blemishes of note. One of the more popular die marriages of the Fugio cent for type purposes, as 189 examples of Newman 8-X remained in the Bank of New York hoard in 1948.
