- Grellman Die State a. Gently mottled gray-brown patina visits surfaces that retain plenty of vivid rose-orange mint color, the high points of the wreath on the reverse further enhanced by iridescent lilac-blue. The strike is boldly executed, both sides free of mentionable blemishes apart from a tiny flan disturbance (as made) over the obverse rim at 3 o'clock that serves as a useful identifier for provenance purposes. The overdate, an inverted 18, is clearly seen behind the 51 of the date on this early die state example, which makes this a popular variety among collectors of overdates, Guide Book varieties, and large cent enthusiasts. You will not find a nicer one than this in the PCGS-certified BN category and, as well, PCGS has not certified an example finer than MS-66 or MS-65 in the RB and RD categories, respectively.
